The Treasury Collection at Rosenborg Castle

Royal Heritage and Collecting in Denmark–Norway, 1500–1900 · Volumes 1–3

Rosenborg holds one of the ten finest princely treasuries in Europe, and remarkably it has stayed in its original setting — roughly nineteen in twenty of its more than a thousand objects still survive. This three-volume work is the in-depth study that collection deserves.

The first volume traces how the treasury came together and closes with an art-historical reading of what it contains, drawing on sources not used before — including travel diaries held in foreign archives. Out of that evidence comes a fresh account of royal propaganda and of how a Danish national identity was shaped. The remaining two volumes form a full catalogue raisonné: every object is set against extracts from the original inventories, described and illustrated with comparisons to pieces abroad, and accompanied by its own bibliography.

A reference work built on the historic inventories of 1696 and 1718 — better suited to collectors, curators and serious enthusiasts than to casual reading.
